Athens - Jack Richard Townsend, 79, died Saturday, May 17, 2008 at St. Mary's Hospice House.
Born in Spruce Pine, N.C., he was the son of the late Colonel Calvin and Janie King Townsend. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wives, Julene Townsend and Barbara Edenfield Townsend.
A resident of Athens since 1975, he was the owner and operator of BET-Townsend Hearing Aids. He served his country in the US Air Force during WWII and the Korean Conflict. He was a graduate of Akron University, Life Time member of the Athens Lions Club, Georgia Associating for Hearing Care Professionals where he had served as president and vice president. He was a member of VFW Post # 2872, Athens Chamber of Commerce, and the Georgia Federation for Independent Businessmen. He was of the Methodist faith.
Survivors include four children, Colleen Lewis of Oxford, Ga., Glen Townsend of Monticello, Ga., Bruce Townsend of Jackson, Ga., Rick Townsend of Baxley, Ga.; sister, Wilma Pritchard of Marion, N.C.; twelve grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and his loving cat, Katie.
The family will receive friends from 3 - 5 p.m. and 7 - 9 p.m., Wednesday, May 21, 2008 at Lord & Stephens West Chapel. A graveside service will be held Thursday, May 22, 2008 at 11 a.m. at the Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Milledgeville, Ga., with military honors accorded. Rev. Will Lewis will be officiating.
