Carlton - J.P. Smith, 89, died Thursday, December 17, 2009.
A lifetime resident of Oglethorpe County, he was the son of the late James Pierce Smith Sr. and Clara Turner Smith. He served his country in the U.S. Army during WWII in the South Pacific and was a retired building contractor. JP was a member of Sandy Cross Baptist Church where he had served as Deacon and former Clerk of Glade Baptist Church where he was ordained as a deacon. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
Funeral services were be held Sunday, December 20, 2009, at 2 p.m. at Sandy Cross Baptist Church with Rev. Jeff Lester officiating. Burial will follow at the Glade Cemetery.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Syble Mathews Smith, who he married December 22, 1945; daughters and sons-in-law, Peggy and Boyd Cook of Athens, Judy and Bill Sorenson of Omaha, Neb., Patricia and John (deceased) Maxey, Dixon, Ill.; grandchildren, Chris and Quinn Cook, of Albany, Ga., Paul and Megan Griffiths of Las Cruces, N.M., Greg Griffiths of Omaha, Neb., Jeff and Amy Maxey of Windsor, Ill., Tim and Christy Maxey of Bloomington, Ill., and Eric and Robyn Epps of Rock Falls, Ill.; and seven great-grandchildren.
