Helen Joan Harbin passed away peacefully on the morning of July 7, 2017, at her home in Watkinsville, Georgia. She was 94 years old. Helen will always be remembered for her dedication and commitment to her family, her compassion and for her love of nature. Her greatest joy was being surrounded by her six children, twelve grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
Helen was born in Brooklyn, New York, April 20, 1923. She began her education at Seton Hill University in Pennsylvania and completed her degree, after raising six children, with a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology from Georgia State University. Along with her husband, she became an avid collector of Folk Art and obtained her Master Gardener Certificate. She was dedicated to community service working with the Moore's Ford Memorial Committee, Citizens for Responsible Growth, Catholic Family Services and the Oconee Cultural Arts Foundation.
Helen was preceded in death by her best friend and husband of 56 years, Cecil, and son, Stephen. She is survived by daughters Kathleen (John) Boyle of Cumming, Elizabeth (Michael) McDermott of Denver, CO, Bertille (John) Parsons of Watkinsville and sons Michael (Rowena Worrall) Harbin of Decatur, and Paul (Mo) Harbin of Birmingham, AL; grandchildren Michael Boyle, Jennifer Cohen, Mac McDermott, Andrea Burnett and Megan McDermott, Maggie Stephens and Rebecca Parsons, David and Joanna Harbin and Jessica, Anna and Andrew Harbin; and great grandchildren Katie and Emily Cohen and Hayley and Henry McDermott.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, July 23, from 3:00 to 4:00 PM at Lord and Stephens Funeral Home West, 1211 Jimmy Daniel Road, Watkinsville, GA 30622. Memorial services will follow at 4:00 PM with Rev. Rex Kaney officiating. Interment will be July 24 at 10:00 AM at Arlington Memorial Park, Atlanta.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Helen may be made to the Oconee Cultural Arts Foundation (OCAF.com) or the Alzheimer's Association (alz.org).
Lord and Stephens, WEST, is in charge of arrangements.
