Hazel Wheeler Everett, 89, died July 17, 2024.
A native of Anderson, SC, Hazel was a daughter of the late Elmer H. and Lucille Roberts Wheeler. She was also preceded in death by her husband, James Harold Everett, daughter Deborah Denise Wooten and sisters, Shirley Louise Thornton and Betty Jo House.Hazel lived in this area most of her life, having moved with her family from Griffin, GA, but also lived in Oklahoma and Washington during her husband's Air Force deployment. She was a member of Mars Hill Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School for twenty-five years, was WMU Director and served on the Mars Hill Missions Committee and as a Mars Hill Elections District Poll Manager for a number of years.She served at the Oconee Center for Senior Citizens as a board member. She was an organizing member of the Apalachee Chapter National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, and a member of the Colonial Dames of America , National Society United States Daughters of 1812, National Society Daughters of Founders and Patriots, National Society Colonial Dames XVII Century, Continental Society Daughters of Indian Wars, National Society Daughters of the American Colonists and National Society Southern Dames of America, and served as an executive board member of several of these societies and chaired several committees. She was a former member of the Elijah Clarke Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution.Hazel retired in 1996 from Oconee County Superior Court having served as chief superior and juvenile court clerk. She loved to travel the United States, Canada, Germany and England. She and her husband were avid campers and loved motorcycle riding. She was a talented artist and genealogist and loved reading and classical music. She considered herself as the family matriarch and spent years researching the family ancestors. She is survived by three siblings, Johnny Alexander (Connie) Wheeler, Bonnell (Eugene) Lashley, James Franklin (Carol) Wheeler; grandchildren Katy Rebecca (Lee) Bradley, Alan Everett (Kimberly) Wooten; great grandchildren, Clark James Bradley and Margaret Denise Wooten; and numerous nieces and nephews.Funeral services will be Tuesday, July 23, 2024 at 11:00 AM at the chapel of Lord and Stephens Funeral Home, WEST, with Rev. Rick Brittain officiating. Interment will follow at Oconee Memorial Park.The family will receive friends Monday July 22, 2024 from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital or to one's favorite charity.
