Harold Frederick Zornig died peacefully Monday, March 19, 2012 at his home surrounded by loved ones. Harold was born November 23, 1927 in his farmhouse near Lester, Iowa to Maurine, and Gus Zornig. He attended high school in Rock Rapids, Iowa. Harold served in the Korean War as a First Lieutenant, Combat Engineer, earning the Korean Service Medal with 5 Bronze Stars, United Nations Service Medal, and Army Occupation Medal (Japan).
Harold attended Iowa State University achieving an architectural engineering degree. His career included 18years as a forest engineer for the U.S. Forest Service, research architect for the USDA Forestry Sciences Laboratory at UGA. As a registered architect, he became well known for solar design and low cost housing
Harold is survived by his wife, Mary Zornig, three children, Linda Andrews, Michael Zornig, and Mark Zornig, eight grandchildren, and three great grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother William Zornig and his sister Jean Stadfeldt.
A memorial service for Harold Zornig will be held at 2:00 PM, Sunday, March 25 at Lord & Stephens East Chapel Funeral Home, 4355 Lexington Rd., Athens, GA. A wake will be held for Harold on Saturday, March 24th, at 5:00 PM at 110 Sagewood Dr. Winterville, GA 30683.
