Coach Harold "Hokey" Jackson, 89, husband to Doranne "Dody" Jackson for sixty-two years died Thursday, June 26, 2014.
Coach Jackson, a native of Tallapoosa, GA, was the son of the late Charles and Jenny Jackson. He graduated from Tech High in Atlanta where he was involved in sports, lettering in four. He later graduated from the University of Georgia where he was a four year letterman on the UGA baseball team. He served his country in the United States Army Air Corps during World Ward II. Later in his career Coach Jackson was an assistant football coach and a teacher in Jesup, GA for one year. He later became head coach at Bradwell Institute and taught in Hinesville, GA for 13 years winning the State Championship in 1965. He retired from coaching in 1970 but not before being named Region Coach of the Year four times and State Coach of the Year once. Coach Jackson was loved and respected by many for his faithful dedication to athletics. He was known to be a father figure to so many, not just a coach. His influence made leaders out of many of his players and they stayed in contact because he never stopped believing in them. Later he was an instructor at UGA in the Department of Health, PE and Safety within the College of Education, retiring in 1981. But although retired, he never stopped coaching. He remained active in his sports as he watched his UGA Bulldogs play, kept in touch with coaches and old players across the state, and played golf daily with his Athens Country Club friends, winning many awards there. Coach Jackson will be greatly missed because he was an admirable man gifted with the ability to lead, influence, and shape the lives of so many young people.
Survivors in addition to his wife include his son; Kim Hendren (wife Lynn) of Abu Dhabi, UAE; daughter: Becky Hendren of Athens; granddaughters: Heather Peisel (husband Cory) of Abu Dhabi, UAE and Stephanie Hendren of New Zealand; great granddaughter: McKinley Grace Peisel and several nieces and nephews.
