Harley Frank Shurling Sr. went to be with his Lord and Saviour Saturday, September 5, 2015, at his home after an extended illness.
Mr. Shurling was born May 17, 1926 in Tennille, Georgia to Harley Tug and Mary Eva Peavy Shurling. He graduated from Tennille High School in 1943. Upon graduation, he attended the University of Georgia and earned his Bachelor's Degree in Animal Science. While in school, Mr. Shurling was drafted into the US Army. He spent two years in Korea as a Staff Sergeant during the close of World War II. Upon his discharge from the Army and subsequent graduation from the University of Georgia, he married Marguerite Christine Thaxton. They moved to Thomasville, Ga where he began his career of 35 years with the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Service. He worked as a County Agent for 12 years and was transferred to Athens as a District Agent for the next 23 years. While working, he earned his Master's Degree in Agricultural Cooperative Extension. He retired in 1983.
Mr. Shurling enjoyed going to UGA football games with his wife, Christine. They went to home games for many years and traveled to away games as well. He enjoyed the outdoors and was an avid hunter and fisherman. He and his wife also enjoyed spending time at their lake house fishing and relaxing with family and friends. Mr. Shurling was a very talented wood craftsman. He always had a project of some kind going on in his workshop. Until his death, he continued to take interest in his backyard garden. At any time during the summer, friends and family could always count on him sharing vegetables and muscadines from his vineyard.
Survivors include his children, their spouses: Frank Jr. and Cheri Shurling of Macon, Ga, Pam and BH Anderson of Screven County, and Paula and John McCormick of Screven County, Marjorie Hale, sister, of Watkinsville, Ga., sisters in law Joyce Mosley of Athens, Ga and Mary Adkins of New Baden, TX., and brother in law Howard Thaxton of Lexington, Ga. Grandchildren, spouses and great grandchildren include: John and Holly McCormick, Britt and Thax; Jason and Alison McCormick, Emma, Hagan, and Hudson; Josh and Amber McCormick; Gus and Lesley McCormick, Turner; Suzanne Anderson, Ben Anderson and fiancee' Ashley Fuller; Christie and Robbie Sovie, Brooklyn and Rob; Nick Shurling; Rawson Ridley; Ryan Ridley; and Harley Anne Shurling.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to his loving caregivers Annie Gartrell, Cherry Brown, and Louise Darden. A special thank you goes to Emma Adams who was his primary caregiver for almost 4 years. These ladies provided the care needed for Mr. Shurling to remain at home as he wished.
Services will be held Friday, September 11, 2015 at East Athens Baptist Church at 2:00PM. Visitation will be prior to the service at 1:00 PM at the Church. Mr. Shurling's grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to East Athens Baptist Church.
