Gregory Crane

August 30, 1932 — March 8, 2018

Captain Gregory Lewis Crane, Sr., USCGR, retired, passed away at age 85 on March 8, 2018. He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years Mary Ann Crane and his parents Edward and Wilma Crane. He is survived by his daughter Allison Crane O'Connell (Dennis) of Athens, GA, his son Gregory Crane Jr., (Christine) of Linden, MI, two grandsons Daniel O'Connell and Robert O'Connell of Athens, GA and his brother Richard Crane (Ervin) of Milwaukee, WI.
Gregory was born and raised in Milwaukee, WI and later spent much of his life in Michigan where he raised his family. He retired from an engineering career with A.C. Spark Plug, General Motors, and was a Fellow with the Institute of Industrial Engineering. Gregory spent his life in service to others. He joined the United States Coast Guard and spent 32 years in service to his country, retiring from the Coast Guard Reserves in 1983. He served his beloved community of Grand Blanc, MI as a city councilman, mayor, and police commissioner. He was a participant in the Michigan Municipal League and past president of the Small Cities and Villages Association. He was also active in the Rotary organization serving as District Governor as well as serving as president of the Grand Blanc Rotary Club. He was recognized as a Distinguished Rotarian and was a Paul Harris Fellow. After moving to Athens, GA, Gregory delivered meals with Meals on Wheels, served on the Airport Authority, and pursued his passion of genealogy, sharing his knowledge with others through co-authorship of the "Ask Granny" genealogy program.
A military ceremony will be held on June 4, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at the Georgia National Cemetery, Canton, GA.
