Gregg Phelps

December 30, 1921 — March 24, 2015

After suffering a stroke in her home at Talmage Terrace on March 22nd, Gregg Yarbrough Phelps died peacefully at Athens Regional under the care of Gentiva Hospice with her daughter at her side on March 24th.
Gregg was born in Williamson, Georgia, on December 30th, 1921 and spent most of her childhood in Atlanta. She graduated from Druid Hills High School in 1939 and attended the University of Georgia where she met her future husband of 68 years, Mo Phelps. Gregg and Mo lived in Decatur from 1947 - 1956, moved to Stone Mountain where Mo was the high school principal, then to Athens in 1959 when Mo became Assistant Director, later Director of Admissions at the University of Georgia.
Gregg devoted much of her life to her family. Her own mother died giving birth to her, and Gregg became the sort of wife and mother depicted on 50's TV shows. Her only child, Paula, always knew she had a very special mother when watching other families interact, and treasured this for all of her mother's 93 years. Gregg was active in Paula's school groups (always the room mother), garden clubs, church groups and a variety of community activities while raising Paula and throughout her life. These included Alpha Delta Pi sorority and First Methodist Church of Athens. When Paula left home for college, Gregg decided to return to UGA herself, studying library science. She then began her career as the medical librarian at Athens Regional Medical Center, a job she held for twenty years until her retirement at the age of 72. Not one to sit at home, Gregg used her flair for fashion working at various ladies' dress shops and became a boutique lady at Steinmart when it opened in Athens. She finally retired after working at Steinmart for ten years and continued to enjoy shopping there the rest of her life.
Throughout her life, Gregg was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, taking special pleasure in helping Paula and her husband Bob raise their two sons in St. Simons. GG, as the boys called her, became a beloved person to Max and Brad, many of their friends, and all of Bob's large extended family. She loved to travel with her husband, daughter, girlfriends, and even with her grandsons on their initial European vacations as young travelers.
Gregg loved life, her family, and especially her many friends. She is survived by her daughter Paula Galland, Paula's husband Bob Galland, both of St. Simons; her grandson Max and wife Kim Galland of Athens, her grandson Brad and wife Lizzi Galland of Cartersville, and great grandchildren Sara, Will, and Brogen for whom she had also become their own special GG.
Due to another family medical situation, the family will receive friends later in the Spring in Athens. A private family memorial service will be held in St. Simons. Memorial donations may be made to the Talmage Terrace capital fund.
