Glenn Ann O'Neal

Glenn Ann “Glennie” O’Neal, 89 of Athens, GA passed away on Saturday, September 24, 2022, at Wesley Woods of Athens. She was born on November 11, 1932 in Nashville, TN to Glenn Hamilton Keith and Katheryne MayBelle Odom Keith. Glennie graduated with a degree in Child Development from the George Peabody College of Education, which is now part of Vanderbilt University in Nashville. She married her late husband, Earl O’Neal on June 7, 1957. After Earl and Glennie married, they had 4 children and ended up settling down in Conyers, GA.

Glenn Ann dedicated her life to early childhood education. She was a 5th grade school teacher in San Antonio, TX, taught preschool in Waycross, GA, and opened up a nursery school for 4-year-olds in Conyers in 1965 which she ran until her retirement in 1990. She also served as a Conyers Civic League member and past president;

Dekalb-Rockdale Library Board member and board chair during the building of the new Rockdale County Library; Georgia Preschool Association member, board member and past president; Clarke County School District mentor for Alps Road Elementary School; Athens-Clarke County Library volunteer; Girl Scouts of America counselor and volunteer, along with many other philanthropic endeavors. She was honored by the Georgia State House of Representatives with a resolution stating, “Glenn Ann O’Neal is recognized widely throughout the state as the personification of excellence in preschool education.”

She was preceded in death by her husband: Earl Lamar O’Neal, son: Glenn Hamilton Keith O’Neal, parents: Glenn Hamilton Keith and Katheryne MayBelle Odom Keith, sister: Katheryne Keith Flake. Survivors include son: Earl Lamar O’Neal, Jr. (Skip) of Charlotte, NC, daughter: Keith Ann Stone of Fairhope, AL, and daughter Katy O’Neal Arrowood Castanien (husband- David) of Newnan, GA, grandchildren: Glenn O’Neal, Polly O’Neal, Henry Stone, Keith Arrowood (fiance- Elvia Munoz), and Molly Arrowood

Remeika (husband- Rich), sister-in-law: June O’Neal of Valdosta, GA, along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

She will be missed dearly by all whose lives she touched. “A teacher affects eternity; no one can tell where the influence stops.”

There will be a service at the UGA State Botanical Garden Day Chapel on Wednesday, September 28th at 2 pm. 2450 South Milledge Avenue, Athens, GA 30605.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to the State Botanical Gardens of Georgia, Children’s Garden.
