Bishop, GA - Geraldine Young Turnbull, 85, died April 5, 2011.
Born in Oglethorpe County, she was the daughter of the late J. Hollis and Lalage Hemrick Bowden and was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Weyman Dickens Turnbull.
Mrs. Turnbull was a lifelong resident of Oconee County. She worked for the U.S. postal service for approximately 30 years and was active in the National Postmasters' Association. She was Postmaster at Bishop at her retirement in 1990. When her children were at home she was very active in school affairs and the PTA and continued active participation in the Oconee County High School Alumni Association reunions. She enjoyed square dancing in her later years. Mrs. Turnbull was an active partner in the Bellsouth Pioneers during her husband's career and after his retirement. She was a member emeritus of the Oconee County Pilot Club and active in the VFW Auxilliary. She loved the Watkinsville Christian Church and held offices and leadership roles in the Christian Women's Fellowship.
Funeral services will be Friday, April 8, 2011 at 11:00 AM at Lord and Stephens Chapel, WEST with Rev. Doug Ivey and Dr. Franklin Shumake officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be Doc Crawford, Leo Baker, Oliver Kennon, Homer Hansford, Russell Lee, and Roger Smith.
Honorary pallbearers will be The Martha Harris Sunday School Class.
Survivors include her children, Wayne and Nancy Turnbull of Watkinsville and Joe and Sara Turnbull of Ozark, AL; grandchildren, Brian (Leigh) Turnbull, Steven Turnbull, Cheryl (Dennis) Dean, Lynn Seaman, Loretta (Josh) Bridges and Crystal (Todd) Henchel and 10 great grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday from 6:00 until 8:00 PM.
Flowers are optional. Memorials may be made to Watkinsville First Christian Church Building Fund.
