George "Buster" Lamar Nunnally, Jr.

October 27, 1949 — December 28, 2022

Athens

George “Buster” Nunnally, 73, of Athens, Georgia, passed away December 28, 2022 at St.

Mary’s Hospital. He was born at the same hospital to his parents, Carolyn Williams Nunnally and the late George Lamar Nunnally (Jerry) on October 27, 1949.

George graduated from Athens High School in 1967 and earned his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Georgia in 1973. He taught in the Clarke County School District and was named Northeast Georgia Graphic Arts Teacher of the Year in 1978 and 1979. He was also the Clarke Central High School Teacher of the Year in 1979. After continuing his work with the Clarke County School District in administrative roles, he then served Whitfield County Schools in Dalton, Georgia as Director of Maintenance and Operations, followed by Director of Construction and Planning. Eventually, George retired from the University of Georgia as the Work Management Coordinator for the Physical Plant Division.

George Buster Nunnally chose to love and serve God. He deeply loved his family, friends, pets, Thompson Farm, Temple United Methodist Church, and Georgia Football. He worked hard at perfecting his grilling/smoking abilities, making sure to share every delicious masterpiece with anyone who would take a plate. He certainly kept Thompson Farm well fed. Everyone who knew him would agree that he was a goofball; although he didn’t mind what others thought because he believed in the Lord’s plan. One thing George taught well is that life is a learning process and everything continues to change throughout, so we must have faith and trust in God. Buster was a true servant of the Lord. He was always there for each and every one of us, willing to help in any way he could or showing support with kind words. He was quick to lift you up for a better purpose. Buster was knowledgeable, with a quick off-the-cuff humor, and will be truly missed by so many.

He is preceded in death by his father, Jerry Nunnally, and is survived by his mother, Carolyn W. Nunnally of Athens; his son Howard Nunnally (Kendall Cathy); sisters Carol Cason and Martha Harris (Brooks); nephew Chris Cason (Kathy); niece Katie Harris, great nieces Kendall M. Cason and Quinn Paredes; and also the Daltonians: Kayla and Evan, Eli, Kali, Ellie, and Eason Elrod from Tunnel Hill, Georgia; Josh and Morgan, Ranger and Tucker Roberts from Rocky Face, Georgia; Beloved friends Melinda Rainwater from Athens and Wesley Moore from Dalton, Georgia.
