George R. Sanger, beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend passed away on Sunday, March 3, 2019 at his home of 33 years in Athens, GA surrounded by the love and support of his family at the amazing age of 99.
George was born and raised in Oak Hill, WV to Lace and Murl Sanger. He was the oldest of the four Sanger boys, George, Carl, Jack, and Bob. He served his country for four years in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II and was an active Mason and Shriner for over 60 years while living in Charleston, WV. He and Ouida moved to the Athens area after George retired from the Columbia Gas System in West Virginia where he was the manager of cooperate taxes for 33 years.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ouida, his brothers Carl and Jack Sanger, and son-in-law Boyd Ruff.
He is survived by his brother, Bob (Nancy) Sanger of Oak Hill, West Virginia; two daughters, Barbara (Dick) Miller of West Jefferson, North Carolina and Deborah (Tom Saunders) Ruff of Athens; his four grandchildren, Ryan (Jennifer) Miller of Boiling Springs, SC, Erin (Warren) Shepherd of West Jefferson, NC, Hank (Kedra) Ruff and Elizabeth Ruff, both of Nashville, TN; his five great-grandchildren, Riley Miller of Boiling Springs, SC, Graydon Shepherd of West Jefferson, NC, Henry and Penelope Ruff of Nashville, TN, Caden Peeler of Boiling Springs, SC; and several nieces and nephews. Special extended family includes the families of Grace and the late Bill Ruff.
A graveside service will be held 11AM Wednesday at the Oxford Historical Cemetery with Rev. Meg Morrison officiating. Family welcomes friends to drop by the home anytime, as there will be no formal visitation.
