George Benedick Peneguy, Jr. of Commerce, GA, passed away on July 27, 2023, at the age of 87.
Born in New Orleans, Louisiana on February 29, 1936 to George B. Peneguy, Sr. and Carmelite Durapau Peneguy, George was a gifted and faithful man. He had a passion for writing poetry and was known for his remarkable intellect.
George is survived by his former wife, Miriam, and their children: Mike (Susan), Kevin (Dana), Todd (Kathleen), and Eva (Bill). He also leaves behind several beloved grandchildren. George was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Wayne, but is survived by his brother, Lenny (Kathy).
George received his education at Francis T. Nicholls High School and went on to earn his Bachelor's degree from Tulane University and a Master's degree from Dallas Baptist University, both in Engineering.
A dedicated Army veteran, George proudly served his country for three years, stationed in El Paso, Texas.
Throughout his esteemed career, George worked as an Aeronautics Engineer with NASA. He was a valued member of the Apollo 11 Team and was honored on the Apollo/Saturn V Roll of Honor. He was also a Nuclear Physicist with Lockheed Martin, where he helped design guided missiles. His contributions to the aerospace industry were invaluable.
In memory of George, contributions can be made to the Michael J. Fox Foundation, which supports research and awareness for Parkinson's disease, an illness that George bravely fought during his final years.
George Benedick Peneguy, Jr. will be deeply missed by all who knew him. May he rest in peace.
A funeral mass will be held on Saturday, July 29, at the University of Georgia Catholic Center at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Oconee Memorial Park.
