George Edward Heyen, 84, of Athens passed away on March 6, 2022.

Mr. Heyen was born March 6, 1938 in San Antonio, Texas. He was the only son of John Henry George Heyen and Nellie Hilda Saathoff Heyen. Mr. Heyen attended Elementary School at New Fountain, Texas; Harlandale Junior High School and Harlandale High School in San Antonio, Texas. He attended Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas and was awarded a Bachelor of Science Degree along with a Commission in the United States Army Medical Service. He also attended the University of Georgia in Athens, Georgia receiving a Master's degree in Public Administration.

Mr. Heyen served in the United States Army Medical Service Corp from May 5, 1960 – May 5, 1967 at Ft. Sam Houston, TX; Ft. Benning, GA - 2nd Infantry Division; Korea - 1st Cavalry Division: Ft. Bragg, NC: 18th Air Borne Corp, 55th Medical Group; Dominican Republic - 55th Medical Group; Vietnam - 55th Medical Group and 32nd Medical Depot. He was awarded the National Defense Services Medal, Vietnam Services Medal, and the Vietnam Campaign Medal. He was awarded letters of commendation from the Kumchon Provincial Governor in Korea and from General Rhe Bomb June of the Korean Forces in Vietnam.

Mr. Heyen married Redona Ruth Dean on June 8, 1967 in Columbus, Georgia. Mr. Heyen was a member of Beech Haven Baptist Church in Athens and served as a Deacon. He was a Life Member of the Athens Area Military Officers Association of America (AAMOAA) and an Endowment Member of the National Rifle Association.

Along with his wife, Mr. Heyen is survived by his children: Rebecca Heyen Baskins (Joey) and John Dean Heyen (Lynn); grandchildren Joshua Mathew Knight, Drew Baskins, and Evelyn Ruth Heyen; and many cousins.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 26, at Beech Haven Baptist Church at 11 AM with Rev. David Mills officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
