George L. Harmon Jr. of Athens, Georgia passed away peacefully on January 27, 2015. He was originally born in South Carolina and resided at Lanier Gardens in Athens,
George was a 1963 graduate of Clemson University where he earned honors distinction. He worked in the textile industry all over the Southeast for over 20 years, mostly with Burlington Industries where he held various positions in personnel, safety and training. He owned Boot Heel Western and Safety Footwear in Athens for fifteen years and retired in 2001.
George led an active lifestyle as a member of mall walkers, Prince Avenue Baptist Church XYZ and traveling to all 50 states and many foreign countries with his wife Ann.
He was a man who loved God and his country, He was an active member of Prince Avenue Baptist Church and served five years in the United States Army and was discharged with the rank of Captain.
He loved his family and was blessed to have many friends to share his senior years with.
George was preceded in death by his parents, George L. Harmon and Katherine Ann Harmon. He is survived by his wife Ann Moon Harmon of Athens. Two sons: Scott Harmon and his wife Leslie of Little Mountain, South Carolina and Mark Harmon of Travelers Rest, South Carolina. Three grandchildren, Emily Grace Harmon, Luke Harmon and Olivia Harmon. His special adopted family: Bob, Deborah, Katie and Nicole Googe of Athens.
Funeral services will be held at Lord and Stephens West Chapel in Athens. Visitation will be held at 1:00 pm with memorial service to follow at 2:00 pm on Thursday January 29th. Graveside service to follow at Siloam Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Prince Ave Baptist Church Building Fund.
