Retired U.S. Air Force Lt. Colonel George Donald Smith, age 74, died Friday, November 9, 2012. Colonel Smith was the son of the late George Albert and Blanche Nash Smith.
Colonel Smith was a graduate of Watkinsville High School. He received the Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy degree from the University of Georgia and the Master of Science degree from Troy State University in Montgomery, AL.
Colonel Smith had a distinguished career in the United States Air Force Medical Service. He was a graduate of the Air Force Squadron Officers School, Air Command and Staff College and Air War College. His tours of duty included bases in San Angelo and San Antonio, Texas; Washington, D.C.; Honolulu, Hawaii; Montgomery, Alabama; Cocoa Beach, Florida; Okinawa and Germany. He was a decorated officer receiving such medals as Air Force Commendation Medals, Meritorious Service Medals, Viet Nam Gallantry Medal and Outstanding Unit Medals. Mr. Smith was a registered Pharmacist and after his military career he completed a career in pharmacy at the University of Georgia Health Services and also worked at several area pharmacies.
He is survived by his wife Raye Yearwood Smith, Athens, GA; sisters, LaVerne S. Brumley (Charles), Lawrenceburg, KY; Carol S. Toney (Dwain); two brothers, Kenneth Smith; Roger Smith (Ann), Watkinsville, GA; nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews; one aunt, Harriett S. Tucker, Ormond Beach, FL and one uncle, Morton Smith, Watkinsville, GA.
Pallbearers will be John Brumley, Jacob Brumley, David Smith, Camden Reed, Mike Reed, Dave Waters, Bill Brooks and Graham Brooks.
Funeral services will be held at Lord and Stephens, WEST on Sunday, November 11, 2012 at 3:00 PM. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. (2:00 - 3:00 PM)
Entombment will be at Evergreen Memorial Park.
