George Edwin Brown, 80, of Colbert, Georgia, died January 3rd, 2016. "Ed", as he was known to most, was the son of Thomas "Plummer" Brown and Grace O'Neil Brown. He was a member of Sonlight Baptist Church where he attended regularly and served as an usher. He passed away in his home after a battle with lung cancer.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Shirley, his daughter, Elaine Brown, one sister, Sandra Lunsford, and three brothers, William Brown, Jimmy Brown, and O'Neil Brown. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Brandy Huff, Bradley Tucker, George Brown, and Jordan Brown, and seven great-grandchildren, Kole Stafford-Brown, Tristen Huff, Maniya Brown, Jayce Brown, Kendon Brown, Broughton Brown, and Jacob Tucker. He is predeceased by three sisters, Kathleen Maxwell, Doris Rice, and Bonnie Segars, one brother, Gene Brown, his oldest son, Dennis Brown, and his youngest son, Gerald Brown.
Ed worked for over 25 years at the Oglethorpe County Road Department, retiring in 1999 as Chief Mechanic and continued to work odd jobs around the county for his friends up until only a few months prior to his passing. During that time, he also owned several gas and service stations around the area. He always kept busy and loved fixing things. Early in life, Ed was quite the race car driver, racking up a strong reputation as one of the best dirt track drivers in his time. Along with being a skilled driver, he helped build several race cars through the years. Ed was also an avid fisherman and loved being on the water. As most of his family and friends know, he was extremely fond of the Santee Cooper Lakes and took every chance to go fishing for catfish.
In addition to his work and hobbies throughout life, he never met a stranger and would consistently go out of his way to help out anyone he could, family and friends alike. He touched more people's lives just by being himself; a kind man who loved to talk and had a huge heart. He was never short on words and always had a story to tell. He will be greatly missed by his family, his friends, and his community.
