George Hamlin Bishop

Cedar Mountain, NC - George Hamlin Bishop, (85) passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family on August 17, 2013 at his home located in Colbert, Ga. where he resided with his daughter, Rachel Southers and family since 2010.
He was born in Cedar Mountain, NC on May 5, 1928 to the late Boyce and Helen Hudson Bishop. George was the eldest of seven children, predeceased in death by two siblings; Albert Bishop and Katherine Jones. Surviving are his siblings; James "Bud" Bishop of Cedar Mtn., NC, Jane Elliott and husband Jim of Port Matilda, Pa., Arthur Bishop and wife Jennie of Brevard, NC and Mary A. Bishop of Cedar Mtn., NC..
Mr. Bishop is also survived by his children; Mark Bishop and wife Cheryl of Asheveille, NC and Rachel Southers and husband Jerry of Colbert, Ga. Five grand-children; Maggie Bishop, Brooke Armstrong and husband Wesley, Jordan Johnson, George ''Cameron' Johnson, and Preston Johnson. Four step-grand-children; Jason Southers, Joni Eberhart and husband Ben, Kyle Southers, and Jeris Southers. One great-grand-daughter Kennedy Armstrong and three step-great-grand-children; Lindsey Eberhart, Landon Eberhart and Riley Phillips.
Mr. Bishop attended Brevard High School and enrolled in the pre-college class at Brevard College in 1945 where he lettered in football. He was a U.S. Army veteran who served his country from 1946-1950. He returned to the United States after serving in Japan and traveled throughout the country working various jobs. After many miles and numerous adventures he returned to his hometown in Cedar Mtn., NC where he raised his family and was a very loving and devoted father. Mr. Bishop retired from E.I. DuPont Corporation where he was employed for over twenty years. He spent most of his spare time raising farm animals and crops at his home and enjoyed collecting and selling antiques in his post retirement years. He was a member of Rocky Hill Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be Saturday, August 24, 2013 at 11:00 AM at Rocky Hill Baptist Church, Cedar Mountain, NC with Rev. Oliver C. Skerrett, Jr. officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
Honorary pallbearers are James Bishop, Robert Bishop, Alvin Bishop, Arthur Bishop, John Bishop and Jordan Johnson.
