Athens, GA - Frederick Robert Matthews, 84, died November 17, 2013.
Fred was born in Detroit, Michigan on June 23, 1929. He was the only son of the late Dr. Wallace Russell Matthews and Wilhelmina Matthews.
In addition to his parents, Fred was preceded in death by a son, James "Jim" Hamilton Matthews. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Rhoda Arnold Matthews; a son, Robert "Rob" Arnold Matthews; grandchildren, Macey Matthews, Jimmy Matthews and Jackson Matthews.
Fred graduated from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill in 1951 and from North Carolina State University in 1960. He also did graduate work at Cornell University and The University of Georgia. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1954 to 1957 during the Korean Conflict. After being honorably discharged in 1957, he began his career with the USDA Forest Service as a Research Plant Pathologist beginning in 1958 until his retirement in 1988.
Fred was a member of Tuckston United Methodist Church and the Gatekeepers Sunday School Class.
Memorial services will be Wednesday, November 20, 2013 at 1:00 PM at Tuckston United Methodist Church with Dr. James A. Mooneyhan and Rev. John M. Turlington officiating. A reception will follow in the fellowship hall.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Tuckston United Methodist Church Building Fund or St. Mary's Hospice House.
