Frederick "Fred" Martin Hammill, 89, died November 7, 2011.
A native of Beloit, Wisconsin, Mr. Hammill lived in Athens since 1972. He was a son of the late Leslie Alfred and Sadie Martin Hammill and was preceded in death by his first wife, Elizabeth Ann Robson Hammill. Mr. Hammill was a graduate of Georgia Tech and retired after thirty-six years from DuPont, where he worked in Martinsville, VA and was then transferred to Athens, GA to assist with the opening of that plant. He was a First Lieutenant in the Army Air Corps during World War II and the Governor of Georgia Kiwanis from 1985 until 1986. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Athens, where he served as Elder and also a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Martinsville, VA.
Funeral services will be Friday, November 11, 2011 at 3:00 at First Presbyterian Church of Athens. Interment will be at East Lawn Cemetery, Beloit, Wisconsin.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Ann Hammill; daughter, Beth (Henri) Byrnes of Decatur; sons, Marshall Hammill of Decatur, GA, and Martin "Marty" (Cathy) Hammill of Outer Banks, NC; seven grandchildren, Courtney Faith White, Hillary Shahn Bailey, Meagan Brooke Farley, Britton Hammill, Derek Odom, Catherine Hammill, Leslie Hammill and Maddox Hammill; three great grandchildren.
The family will receive friends on Thursday from 5:00 until 7:00 pm at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Mary's Hospice, c/o St. Mary's Foundation, 1230 Baxter Street, Athens, GA 30606-3791.
