Comer - Fred Watson Compton, 87, husband of the late Bernice Dobbs Compton, passed away January 21, 2009, surrounded by his loved ones in the home in which he was born.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 24, 2009 at 2 p.m. at Oak Grove Baptist Church with Rev. James F. Creason and Rev. Ronnie Moon officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be Clay Compton, Randy Compton, Cody Threlkeld, Phil Thomas, Grady Threlkeld and Jim Threlkeld. Honorary pallbearers will be James Cooper, Dean Wade, Ellis Rhoden, John Reed, Dennis Wood, Glenn Wood, Hugh Dorsey Compton and Aubrey Thomas.
Born in Madison County, he was the son of the late Webster G. "Boss" Compton and Mazelle Lord Compton. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Rabun Compton & Rufus Compton; sisters, Glennie Wood & Grace Threlkeld; daughter-in-law, Rhonda Compton. Mr. Compton was a WWII veteran of the US Army. He retired after 34 years of service with Transcontinental Pipeline Company. He was an active lifetime member of Oak Grove Baptist Church. He loved the Lord and his church family. He was a loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He knew the true meaning of being a neighbor and friend. His passion was farming the land in which he grew up on as a child.
Survivors include his children, Paula (Mark) Threlkeld, Tracey (Kerry) Bakker & Charlie Compton; grandchildren, Clay Compton, Randy (Crystal) Compton, Cody (Nicole) Compton, Taylor Bakker & Katy Bakker; and great-granddaughter, Marlee Compton.
Visitation will be held tonight, January 23, 2009 from 6 p.m. - 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
