Frances Reid Wilkes, 89 of Athens, Georgia died September 9, after a short illness, surrounded by her family.
Frances was born in Vidalia, Georgia on April 21, 1929 to Rema Fowler Reid and Maynard Lord Reid, Sr. and was educated in the Vidalia School System. She was predeceased by her parents, daughter, Judy Wilkes Mahoney and her sister Betty Reid Colson. She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Robert L. Wilkes and daughter, Kimberly Wilkes Reuning (Pete) of Sandy Springs; Son-in-law, John Mahoney III of Savannah; Grandsons, John Reuning and Tom Reuning of Sandy Springs, William Olmstead III (Katie) of Athens, Ga., Robert Olmstead of Wilmington NC, and John Mahoney IV of Savannah; Great grandchildren William Olmstead IV and Susan Smith Olmstead of Athens. She is also survived by her two brothers, M.L. Reid of Swainsboro and Charles Reid (Barbara) of Vidalia.
Frances was a dedicated and faithful member of the Methodist Church in several locations. She was giving and attentive to her family and friends with a mother hen attitude. She found painting as a way to express herself and was very naturally gifted and talented. She will be greatly missed by all that knew her.
A memorial service will be held at St. James United Methodist Church Sunday, September 16 in Athens at 3:30 pm with The Reverend Bill Curington officiating. A reception for the family and guests will be held in the church fellowship hall after the service. Interment will be in the Lyons, Georgia City Cemetery at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts can be made to the APR Fund for the renovation of the Fellowship Hall c/o St. James UMC at 111 West Lake Drive, Athens GA 30606.
