Dr. Floyd Randolph Cooper, Jr. passed to his heavenly home on March 25, 2022 at his home in Bogart, GA surrounded by family.

Born in 1930 in Texas, Floyd’s family moved to Decatur, GA in 1940 where he earned his Eagle Scout at age 14, graduated from Decatur Boys High School in 1946, and Emory College in 1949. He graduated from Emory Medical School in 1954 and completed one year internship and one year in general surgery at Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta before serving his country in the U.S. Army for 2 years (1956-57) as Captain of the 44th Mobile Surgical Hospital in Korea.

Dr. Cooper’s residency in Neurosurgery started in 1958 at the Montreal Neurological Institute at McGill University in Canada. It was there that he met his future wife, Doris Patricia Halsall, a neurological nurse. In 1961, he completed his residency at North Carolina Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem. He began practicing in Albany, GA before returning to Atlanta and Piedmont Hospital in 1964. Finally, in 1966 he settled at South Fulton Medical Center in East Point for 29 years. He served as Chief of Staff and was a member of the medical board for 7 years. He loved his “job” and never missed a day of work.

Floyd loved boating and fishing and was a lifetime member of the University Yacht Club at Lake Lanier. He spent his leisure time with family and friends at the “Coo-Kee Lodge.” His love of saltwater led to numerous Florida vacations with boat in tow.

Dr. Cooper is survived by his wife of 62 years, Doris H. Cooper; brother, Jerry LaMarque Cooper of Canton, GA; children: Randy Cooper (Lynn) of Canton, Thomas Cooper (Wendy) of Austin, TX, Catherine Posey (David) of Watkinsville, GA, David Cooper (Dedra) of Statham, GA, and Steve Mayfield of Watkinsville. "Papa" was loved and adored by his 13 grandchildren: William Cooper (Elizabeth) of Chattanooga, TN, Laura Cooper Beckwith (Thomas) of Canton, Lyndie Cooper Carter (Will) of Calhoun, GA, Leanna Cooper of Canton, Haleigh Cooper and Hilary Cooper of Austin, TX, John Mayfield Jr. (Alma Alagic) of Roswell, GA, Ellen Mayfield McDowell (Jarrod) of Fredericksburg, VA, Benjamin Mayfield (Jennifer) of Watkinsville, Cooper Mayfield of Bogart, and Jacob Cooper, Hannah Cooper, and Megan Cooper of Statham; 7 great-grandchildren; nephew Marque Cooper (Denise) of Canton; nieces Susan Cooper Potts (James) of Marietta, GA and Sally Cooper King (Doug) of Jasper, GA; and many great-nieces and -nephews.

Dr. Cooper was preceded in death by his loving parents, Floyd Randolph Cooper Sr. and Jeanne Aymond Cooper of Canton; his younger brother, Aymond Windham Cooper of Canton; and sister-in-law Shirley Bell Cooper of Canton.

Friends and family are invited to a memorial service honoring Dr. Cooper on Saturday, April 23 at Canton First Baptist Church, 1 Mission Point, Canton, GA 30114, at 2:00 p.m. Fellowship with the family will follow the service.
