Fletcher Emmanuel “Manuel” Mattox, 74, husband of Patricia Wheless Mattox for 54 years , died Sunday, January 6, 2019. Born in Elberton, GA, he was the son of the late Jesse James Mattox and Emma Rosalie Wheelis Mattox. Mr. Mattox was a member of Lexington Baptist Church and former member of Sandy Cross Baptist Church, having served as a deacon with both. Manuel began his career in law enforcement at the UGA Police Department in 1969 and retired from the Clarke County Police Department in 1999. Following his retirement, he continued working with the Oglethorpe County Sheriffs Office. He enjoyed baseball and football and was an umpire and referee for high school games. He coached county recreational sports. He was a member of the North East Georgia Officiating Association. Survivors in addition to his wife include two children: Vance (Brenda) Mattox of Lexington, Corrie (Tony) Mattox of Lexington; grandchildren; Jessie Mattox, Peyton Mattox, Eli Mattox, Coop Mattox and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, January 9, 2019 at 1PM at Lexington Baptist Church with Revs. Charles Jones and Rusty Couch officiating. Interment will follow at Sandy Cross Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 on Tuesday, January 8, 2019 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Lexington Baptist Church Youth Fund or the Oglethorpe County High School Booster Club.
