Eugene DeTullio, "Coach D," died on March 31, 2010 at the age of 95. He was born on November 2, 1914 in Far Rockaway, NY. Coach is survived by his wife of 64 years, Eleanor C. DeTullio. He graduated from E. Stroudsburg College in PA, and received his MA degree from Penn State.
Coach was a 1st Lt. In the Army Air Corp, serving at Perrin Field in Sherman, TX from 1942-1946. He was the Fitness Trainer for the troops stationed there. He then taught and coached sports in high schools throughout GA. One of his major achievements was the introduction of a total sports program at the Spalding Jr. High and High School levels.
Coach taught freshman physical education, coached freshman basketball, assisted the golf coach, scouted for football recruits, and supervised the Phys.Ed. Student Teacher program from 1963-1973 at The University of Georgia. One of his greatest accomplishments was to have his freshman basketball team defeat GA Tech's team (score: 79-67) on opening night at the UGA Coliseum.
Gene served as scorer on the ninth green for the Masters Golf Tournament in Augusta for 22 years. "Coach D" loved the game of golf, both as an avid player and spectator.
