Estelle (McGoogan) Daniels

August 20, 1925 — January 15, 2024

Athens, GA

On the morning of January 15, 2024, Estelle McGoogan Daniels passed away peacefully in her Athens GA. retirement community after several yearlong periods with multiple progressive health issues.  She was 98 years old.

Estelle was born to Polly Walters McGoogan and William Hugh McGoogan in Red Springs, N.C. in August of 1925.  Estelle was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Billy C. Daniels, and was a devoted caretaker to him through several difficult years after he had strokes.  Estelle will be greatly missed by her children, Becky (Olin) Boutz and Jim (Ann) Daniels; grandchildren Lauren Boutz, Ben (Carley) Daniels, Sarah Daniels , and Matthew (Julia) Daniels; great-grandchildren Julianna, Fletcher, Linnea, Henry, twins Ben and  Charlie and Archer born just two months ago.  She also leaves behind a large extended family including her nieces and nephews with whom she had a very special relationship and forever will be known as Aunt Estelle.

In addition to her parents and husband, Estelle was predeceased by her sister Sarah Williams (Maurice), brother Billy McGoogan (Mary Lea), and sister Elizabeth Wright (Baxter). The four couples were best friends, and the entire family will forever remember the fun they had and the bond they shared.

Estelle graduated from Flora MacDonald College in 1944.  Estelle and Bill met during the war when he was serving at Ft. Bragg N.C.  where Estelle was working. When the war and his tour ended, they got married and went back to his home state of Missouri.  Bill’s career took them to the Philadelphia area.  Estelle spent many years as a homemaker and then as a Real Estate Agent.  Estelle and Bill were very active in their church and were Sunday School teachers, Elder, and Young Adult Youth Group Leaders. Once they retired and moved to North Myrtle Beach S.C., they were very active in the community and were named “Volunteers of the Year”. Estelle especially liked volunteering at the Helping Hand charity.

Estelle was an avid Bridge player and was playing three times a week up until age 96.  She will be sadly missed by her many “bridge friends,” especially Joanne, Jean, and Carol.

The family would like to say a special thank you to Estelle’s caregiving team led by Barbara F. and to her special friend Michael R. who provided daily laughter and watched out for her. Many thanks to the extraordinary Hospice team that provided so much support for Estelle and the family in her last days.

A Celebration of Estelle’s Life will be held in North Myrtle Beach, S.C .sometime in the Spring.

Lord and Stephens Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. www.lordandstephens.com
