Essie Claud Bloodworth Hughes, 83, passed away on January 25, 2015 at her home.
Claud Hughes was a retired master school teacher and reading specialist with Dekalb County Schools who moved to Athens in 2003 from Decatur. She was the daughter of Gertie Mixon Bloodworth and Roy L. Bloodworth of Elko.
Siblings include Eva Etheridge of Macon; Charlee Goolsby of Athens; the late Henry Bloodworth of St. Marys; Glynis Ellis of Grovania; and Bobbe B. Richardson, Stewart I. Bloodworth, and James L. Bloodworth, Sr. of Perry. Children are Gary L. Mashburn and wife Luann of Jacksonville Beach, FL; Susan M. White and husband Myron Newton of Buford; Daven H. Mashburn and wife Helen of Weston, FL. Grandchildren are Daven M. Mashburn of Phoenix, AZ; Kayla Devenburg of Jacksonville, FL; Nicholas Mashburn of Boston, MA; Naomi Kirchner of Sugar Hill; Leo Bialis-White of Oakland, CA, and Claudia Mashburn and Henry Mashburn of Weston, FL.
Claud was deeply connected to her grandchildren and took an interest in each of their lives. She was an avid gardener, reader, scholar, and learner. She volunteered with Athens-Clarke Literacy Council and was a substitute teacher at Clarke Central HS into her 80th year.
Arrangements are to be determined. Per her wishes, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to each person's charity or cause of choice.
