Emily Barnes Mills Porter
July 21, 1927-December 23, 2023
Born in the town of Newborn Georgia to Emory and Ivey Barnes, Emily was a long time resident of Athens, graduating from Athens High in 1945. She was preceded in death by her husbands Frank Mills Sr. (1948-1996) and Howard Porter (2001-2007) and son Frank Norwood (Woody) Mills Jr. Survivors include her daughter Barbara (Mark) Megaw of Athens, GA, son David (Margie) Burroughs of Gainesville, GA, granddaughter Angela Megaw of Gainesville and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She worked at S.H. Kress & Company, Rodgers Hosiery Mill, and Tony's Diner before becoming a pioneer employee of Dairy Pak (now Pactiv Evergreen) where she worked for over 40 years. After retirement she briefly demoed products in local stores and was the proud owner of her own bakery, Emily's Pies and Cakes. She was an avid gardener and baker and loved camping and fishing in the North Georgia mountains where she made life-long friends.
A graveside service will be held on January 4, 2024 at 2 pm in the Bishop Cemetery.
