Elizabeth "Bettye" Dann, 70, died November 4, 2011.
A native of Daytona Beach, FL, she was the daughter of the late Elmer and Connie Clifton Dann and was preceded in death by her brother, Steve Dann.
Bettye graduated nursing school in 1962 at Orange Memorial Hospital in Orlando, FL and Nurse Midwifery School from the University of MS Jackson in 1976. She started the midwifery program at Athens General Hospital in 1977 with her dear friend Angela Best and delivered over 2000 babies during her career.
She was a well known and dedicated member of the UGA Catholic Center. Bettye was a superb cook and shared her love of food with her church and community. She and Angie made decorated cookies and desserts as well as dinners for many. Those who were so fortunate to partake in their cooking will definitely remember it.
For many friends Christmas did not start till they walked in the door to The Best Dann Christmas Party in Athens. The iconic celebration with food and libations is an annual event.
She will be missed on so many levels. Her unconditional love, friendship, church and community ministry, and dedication to midwifery remain unprecedented.
Bettye enjoyed reading, fishing, day trips, and spending time with friends, After retiring, she loved spending time at her mountain retreat in Blairsville. It was one of her very favorite places.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Athens Regional Medical Center Fund Development in Memory of Elizabeth "Bettye" Dann to be used in the Nurse Midwifery Program.
