Athens - Mr. Edward Jones Porterfield passed away at White Dove Personal Care Home on August 26, 2011. Mr. Porterfield was born in Carlton to J. Estee and Vinia Mae Porterfield on May 27, 1922. He served his country honorably in U.S. Army during WWII, receiving a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star. Following his service in the U.S. Army he worked for the U.S. Forestry Service as a research technician. Mr. Porterfield was a member of the Lexington Masonic Lodge, the Glade Volunteer Fire Dept. and the Glade United Methodist Church. Mr. Porterfield is preceded in death by his wife, Mitchella Turner Porterfield. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Dale and Lisa Porterfield; sisters Peggy Bartell, Evelyn Knott, and Tabitha Hoffman; Granddaughters Kristin and Kelli Porterfield.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, August 28, 2011 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Funeral services to be held on Monday, August 29, 2011 at 1 p.m. from the Glade United Methodist Church with the Rev. Wiley Carney officiating. Mr. Porterfield will lie in state at the church from 12 to 1 p.m. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family has asked in lieu of flowers that donations be make to the Glade United Methodist Church Building Fund C/O 1760 Lexington-Carlton Rd. Carlton, GA 30627.
Lord and Stephens Oglethorpe Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
