Edward Bruce Armstrong died September 11, 2015, at the age of 89.
The son of Dr. Thomas Blake Armstrong, Sr. and Harriet Coker Armstrong, Bruce was born November 6, 1925 in Atlanta. He was a 1943 graduate of Boys High and 1947 graduate of Georgia Tech with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He also attended graduate school at the University of Georgia where he met his wife.
Bruce is survived by his wife of 62 years, Frances Varner Armstrong ; children, Mary Armstrong Stone (Jeffrey) of Athens, Robert Armstrong of Athens, Barbara Armstrong of Athens, Carol Armstrong Beard (Russell) of Simpsonville, SC; and five grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, sister, Anne Armstrong Bennett of Huntsville, AL and brother, Thomas Blake Armstrong, Jr. of Covington, GA.
Bruce pursued many career paths including education by teaching math and drafting at numerous schools in Georgia and North Carolina. He retired from the Engineering Department of Athens Regional Medical Center.
In his youth, Bruce was active in his church youth group and enjoyed climbing Stone Mountain, spelunking, camping and biking. He once rode his bicycle from Atlanta to Tampa, FL. He loved music and enjoyed listening to his collections of various recordings. He was an active member of Athens First United Methodist Church for many years and enjoyed volunteering in the nursery.
At Bruces's request, his body was donated to the Medical College of Georgia for the advancement of science. A memorial service is scheduled for October 23 at 3:00 PM in the sanctuary of Athens First United Methodist Church, 327 N. Lumpkin Street, Athens, GA. A reception will follow in the John Wesley Parlor.
