Athens - Edna Helen Nigro was born May 24, 1919 in Chicago, Illinois; died April 23, 2010 in Athens. A resident of Athens since 1969, she was an active member of the Athens community, contributing to various local organizations, such as the Jeannette Rankin Foundation, the League of Women Voters, the local chapter of the Democratic Party and the Athens Unitarian Fellowship. A generous and caring woman, Edna Nigro also supported numerous national charities and foundations, among them the Memorial Sloane Kettering Cancer Foundation, St. JudeÃs Hospital for Children and the Alzheimers Association. A firm believer in peace and justice, she also supported the Southern Poverty Law Center, the United Farm Workers and the American Indian College Fund. Her wit, deep intelligence and keen appreciation of the English language were major contributors to the successful career of her late husband, Professor Felix A. Nigro. An avid reader, world traveler and cat lover, Edna Nigro leaves behind a legacy of love for and steadfast friendship with the people whose lives she touched. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her sister, Harriet Montgomery. Survivors include her son, Lloyd G. Nigro and daughter-in-law, Carol L. Nigro of Atlanta; her daughter, Kirsten F. Nigro of El Paso, Texas and son-in- law, David G. Saile of Cincinnati, Ohio; her grandchildren, Michael A. Nigro of Atlanta, Megan A. Saile of Cincinnati, Ohio and Kimberly F. Van Etten of Lilburn; and her great-granddaughter Amberly H. Van Etten. Her family always will miss her very much and is comforted by the knowledge that she is reunited with the love of her life, her husband of 69 years. A memorial is planned for late summer or early fall.
