Eddie Alton Lockamy, Jr., a long-time resident of Athens, died January 28, 2017.
Eddie was born August 12, 1943 in Durham, NC to the late Edward Alton Lockamy, Sr. and Doris Jones Lockamy.
He was a clinical microbiologist who worked for the University of Georgia Health System's laboratory and for several independent labs. The highlight of his career was partnering with two other professionals to open the former Northeast Georgia Reference Lab in Athens.
Eddie was accepted into Mississippi Southern College at the age of 16 on a band scholarship. He graduated from the University of Miami and attended graduate school at the University of Georgia. He began his work in the medical field while serving as a corpsman with the U.S. Navy in Vietnam.
Eddie was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and brother. Survivors include his wife of 41 years, Denise Foster Lockamy and daughter Beth Lockamy (Andrew Hearn) of Athens; son Ryan Lockamy (Kendra) and grandchildren Rhys and Amelia Lockamy, of Durham, NC; sister Susan Lockamy Norman of Cumming; and several nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Cancer Foundation of Northeast Georgia, The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, or the Food Bank of Northeast Georgia.
