Dwain A. Toney, 82, husband of Carol S. Toney , died at home Thursday, August 28 , 2014 , surrounded by
family and friends.
A native of Carnesville, GA, he was the son of the late Charles Luther Toney and Janna Blanche Casey Toney. In addition to his parents, Dwain was preceded in death by his brother, Julian B. Toney and sister, Jeanette T. Weldon. Mr. Toney served in the US Army, retired from National Guard and US Army Reserves and was a long standing member and Elder of Watkinsville First Christian Church. He retired after 34 years from ASCS as the Executive Director of Clarke and Oconee Counties. He belonged to the Athens-Clarke County Officials Association and refereed high school basketball for over 40 years. Mr. Toney was a 1963 graduate of Piedmont College with a degree in Business Administration, and in 2012, he was awarded the Distinguished Alumni Award. After graduation, he began his career with the United States Department of Agriculture serving in Banks County. He continued with ASCS in Baldwin, Stephens and Oconee County where he served as Executive Director. Mr. Toney was appointed Recreation Chairman of Oconee County and was instrumental in developing the Herman C. Michael Recreation Facility in 1984. He received the Oconee County Chamber of Commerce Outstanding Service as President Award in 1988. Mr. Toney also enjoyed working the 1996 Summer Olympic Games in Atlanta, GA, and supervising ushers at the UGA and Atlanta Falcons football games which also included a Super Bowl assignment in 2005.
Survivors in addition to his wife of 38 years include three daughters and sons in law, Pamela and Tommy Gill
of Carnesville, Denise and Tim O'Neill of Greenville, Lisa and Bill Brooks of Watkinsville; brothers and sisters in
law: Harold F. and Louise Toney of Framingham, Mass., Dwight E. and Doris Toney of Marietta, C. Byron and
Diane Toney of Lavonia, two grandchildren, Dillon Casey O'Neill and Graham Christian Brooks.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, August 31, 2014 at 3PM at Lord & Stephens West Chapel with Rev. Sheila Hunter officiating. Burial will follow at Evergreen Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 1:30 until service time.
Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Watkinsville First Christian Church or Herman C.
