Duane Lin Hartley, age 76, died Monday, October 4, 2010 in Athens, Georgia. A New Year's Baby, Duane was born January 1, 1934 in Kansas City, Missouri, the first son of the late Mabel Chasteen and Wiley Lin Hartley. Duane graduated from Central College in Fayette, Missouri in 1956, then served in the United States Army stationed at Fort Hamilton, New York from 1956-1958. He then returned to his studies receiving his M.Ed., 1963, and Ed.D., 1967 from the University of Missouri at Columbia.
Dr. Hartley's long career in education includes a position of Assistant Professor of Counselor Education at the University of Georgia, 1967 - 1976, after which Dr. Hartley relocated to the University of Missouri at Kansas City where he later retired as Professor and Chair, Division of Counseling Psychology and Counselor Education in 1995. Duane then returned to Athens, Georgia to be close to his children, Jennifer and David, daughter-in-law, Kitty, and grandchildren, Jeffrey, Hallie and Wiley who were fortunate to know him and miss him dearly. Duane is also survived by his sister Carole Morgan, brother, Russell Hartley and several nieces and nephews. Duane is preceded in death by his sister Betty Gillespie as well as his parents.
A celebration of Duane Hartley's life will be held at the home of his daughter, Jennifer Hartley, 175 Cleveland Avenue, Athens, Georgia, Saturday November 20th, 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Duane's name are being accepted at Shepherd Center Foundation, 2020 Peachtree Road Atlanta, GA 30309 or www.Shepard.Org.
