Athens - Dr. Paul Edward Kelly, 83, died May 14, 2011. He was born February 23, 1928 in Rockford, Ill., to the late Virgil A. and Nelle Smith Kelly. Survivors include his wife, Jane Woodman Kelly; daughters, Kathryn (Aubrey) Fogle and Susan (Larry) Rains, of Athens; son, Dr. Jon Kelly (Dr. Elizabeth Mannino), of San Diego, Calif.; grandchildren, Chris (Leigh) Fogle, Beth Fogle (Nick) Burbridge, Kelly and Jay Rains, and Michael, Chris, Kathleen, Alexandra, and Michelle Kelly; and great-grandchildren, Ben and Emme Fogle, and Nicholas Burbridge. Dr. Kelly had a long and distinguished career. Following China Service, U.S. Navy, 1946-48, he received his bachelor's and master's degrees from Bradley University. He received degrees from the University of Chicago (A.M.) in 1957; Pembroke College of Oxford University, England (Dip. Ed.) in 1958; and Harvard University (Ed. D.) in 1961. He was an associate professor at the University of Virginia from 1961-1967, a visiting professor at Columbia and Harvard, and spent a year at Dartmouth College as Associate Director of a national sociology project. He was a full professor at UGA from 1967-1991, and professor emeritus from 1991 onward. His memberships included Pi Kappa Alpha, UGARA, NEA, VFW, and Kiwanis. Dr. Kelly travelled extensively, touring six continents. He took pride in his role as the family historian and had many interests. He enjoyed watching sporting events, reading, collecting, fishing, and corresponding with family and friends. Funeral services were held May 19 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, in Spring Valley, Ill., with interment at Valley Memorial Park Cemetery. Pallbearers were Aubrey Fogle, Larry Rains, Chris Fogle, Chris Kelly, Jay Rains, and Dr. William Hoover. Memorials may be made to St. Mary's Hospice Services, P.O. Box 6588, Athens, GA 30604.
