Dr. James B. Weaver, III, of Atlanta passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, September 16.
Jim was born January 23, 1956 in Athens, Georgia; the only child of Dr. J.B. Weaver, Jr and the late Betty D. Weaver. Jim earned his bachelor of science in agricultural communication and master of arts in Journalism and Mass Communication from the University of Georgia and his doctorate in Mass Communication from Indiana University. Prior to coming to CDC, he was a professor having taught at Indiana University, the University of Kentucky, Auburn University, Virginia Tech, Emory University and the University of Georgia. He joined CDC in 2007 shortly after going back to school to earn his master of public health from Emory University. In 2009, he was awarded the Outstanding Health Marketing Scientist of the Year.
Jim touched the lives of so many people with his kindness, caring, compassion, wit, humor, analytical and problem solving skills, and his knack for acquiring knowledge that almost no other person knows about whether it was about science, long distance motorcycle riding, hunting, fishing, golfing, or stories from his "first" career as a broadcaster working as a radio DJ where he earned an Emmy for news reporting to producing several of John Mellencamp's videos while at Indiana University. He immensely enjoyed being with his family and never missed any of his kids games or activities as well as working on the family farm, Beaver Creek, every weekend. Jim was a multi-event Iron Butt Rider who set the standard for long distance riding, was a regular contributor to the Iron Butt magazine and the magazine of the Gold Wing Road Riders Association, and organized the Grand Tour of Georgia and the Team Lyle rally. He was an amazing man who lived a very full life and we will miss him greatly.
In addition to his father, survivors include his wife, Dr. Stephanie Sargent Weaver; daughter, Amanda Lee Weaver; sons, Geoffrey Matthew Weaver, Cristopher James Weaver and James Bode Weaver, IV; grandchildren, Sylvia, Maddie, Perry and Alden Weaver; brother and sister-in-law, Dr. John S.
