Dr. Henry Herbert “Nubbin” Cobb, III passed away peacefully on the 20th of November 2018 at his home in Athens, Georgia. Henry was born on September 9, 1946 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Athens, Georgia to the late Henry Herbert Cobb, Jr. and Anna May Pryor Cobb. Henry was the older brother of Catherine “Kitty” Cobb Carroll. He graduated from Athens High School in 1964 and attended the University of Georgia. During his undergraduate years, Henry was a member of the University of Georgia golf team, Chi Psi fraternity, and the R.O.T.C. During this time, Henry also met his wife, Brenda Elizabeth Huggins, and they married in December of 1968. While at the University of Georgia, he was inducted into Phi Kappa Phi, the Rho Chi society, and was a member of the pharmacy society, Phi Lambda Sigma. After completing his B.S. in pharmacy in 1969, Henry served in the United States Air Force for five years as Chief Pharmacist, based in the Philippines and then Fayetteville, North Carolina. A fifth-generation Athenian, he returned to Athens and was hired by the College of Pharmacy in 1974. He later completed a master’s degree and a Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of Georgia College of Pharmacy. His allegiance to the pharmacy profession and the University of Georgia was a constant in his life. In addition to teaching, Henry practiced as a hospital pharmacist, clinical pharmacist, community pharmacist and nursing home pharmacist. He worked at St. Mary’s Hospital for 44 years.
Henry’s leadership for the profession of pharmacy won him recognition of countless awards, such as multiple Georgia Pharmacist Magazine dedications, Phi Delta Chi’s Teacher of the year award, the Dean’s award for outstanding teaching, and the Rufus A. Lyman award for an outstanding article published in the American Journal of Pharmaceutical Education.
Henry was a respected father, grandfather, husband and pharmacist. He attended Tuckston United Methodist Church, where he taught on Sundays and served on various boards. His strong faith propelled him to complete the program of Theological Education from the School of Theology, the University of the South. Henry served on the board of directors for the Easter Seals of North Georgia and maintained an active role in both the Georgia and the American pharmaceutical associations.
Henry was devoted to his family. Henry and Brenda would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary this December. They have three children, Anna Cobb Dempsey (Lee), Melinda Cobb Carr (Bryan), and Henry Herbert Cobb, IV (Amanda), and seven grandchildren.
Services will be officiated by Reverend Jeanette Dickens and will take place at Tuckston United Methodist Church on December 16, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. with a reception following in the Fellowship Hall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Henry’s memory to the University of Georgia School of Pharmacy or Tuckston United Methodist Church.
