Dr. Clanton Candler Black, Jr., 79, died August 14, 2011.
A native of Tampa, FL, he was a son of the late Cora Eady and Clanton Candler Black, Sr. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Hayes Black.
Dr. Black received his undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of Florida. Dr. Black was a member of the faculty of the University of Georgia for 44 years, working as a research professor of biochemistry and molecular biology and actively teaching students up until the time of his death. Dr. Black traveled extensively for his research, visiting all 7 continents and numerous countries.
Dr. Black was a member of Green Acres Baptist Church for 44 years. He was active in the Senior Men's Sunday School class and served on the Board of Deacons.
Dr. Black enjoyed bird hunting, fishing, and traveling with family and friends.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, August 17, 2011 at 2:30 PM at Green Acres Baptist Church with Dr. Buddy Parrish officiating. Interment will be Monday, August 22, 2011 at 2:00 PM at Flemington Baptist Church Cemetery, 18250 NW 100th Avenue Road, Micanopy, FL 32667-8102.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Betty L. Black; three children, Kay (George) Adams of Midlothian, VA, Clanton (Jenna) Black, III of Decatur, GA, and Julia (Carl) Bonner of Farmville, NC; sisters, Emogene Anderson of Alachua, FL and Ann Victor of Ocala, FL; eight grandchildren, Benjamin Adams, Daniel Adams, Rebekah Adams, Jasmine Black and Sarah Catherine Black, Candler Black, Dantzler Bonner and Kelcey Bonner; three nephews and one niece.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Senior Men's Sunday School Class.
The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6:00 until 8:00 pm at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Mary's Hospice or Melanoma Research Foundation, 1411 K Street, NW 500, Washington, DC 20005.
