Dr. Adelbert Elton Wade, Jr. of Winterville passed away on Monday, March 28, 2022 at the age of 95. Dr. Wade was born in Hilliard, Florida to the late Adelbert Elton Wade and Esther Elvira Sundberg as the youngest of four sons. Upon his high school graduation, Dr. Wade served in the United States Navy during WWII. Following his discharge, Dr. Wade returned to Florida where he met and married his wife, Mary Lucy Cooper. He then attended the University of Florida where he earned his Bachelors of Science, Masters, and Doctoral degrees in Pharmacy. In 1959, Dr. Wade began his career with the University of Georgia College of Pharmacy where he remained until his retirement as Head of the Department of Pharmacology in 1989. He was also a respected published author throughout his career.
Though considered an extremely demanding professor by his students and faculty, Dr. Wade always saw the best in each person and had a kind and gentle spirit. He enjoyed writing, traveling, wood working, gardening, and fishing. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Athens where he enjoyed teaching Bible study classes. Dr. Wade lead by wonderful example. He was a man of faith, a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather, an inspiring educator, a courageous veteran, and a lifelong learner. Dr. Wade was dearly loved by his family and friends and leaves a lasting legacy to three generations behind him.
Dr. Wade is preceded in death by his wife of 37 years, Mary Cooper Wade; his son, Dr. William Wade; his second wife of 32 years, Clark Petty Wade; Clark’s daughter, Teresa Stone; Clark’s granddaughter, Dixie Adair Tuberville; and his brothers: Merle Wade, Nathan Wade, and Harold Wade.
Dr. Wade is survived by his son, Dr. James (Nancy) Wade; daughter-in-law, Theresa Wade; grandchildren: Alex (Jennifer) Wade, Ben (fiancée, Katie) Wade, Mary (John) Thompson; great-grandchildren, Lucas Wade and Levi Wade; Clark’s children and grandchildren: Pat (Bill) Thompson, Joan Petty, James Robert (Sandra) Petty, Laura (Jason) Cleghorn, Bobby Petty, Kayla (Cain) Neisler, Austin Cleghorn, and Audrey Cleghorn.
Graveside services will be held on Thursday, April 7, 2022 at Athens Memory Gardens at 11:00 a.m.
