Douglas D. Mattox

February 16, 1961 — April 12, 2022

Douglas Dwayne Mattox, 61, husband of Sherry Mattox, died Tuesday, April 12th, 2022. Born in Athens, GA he was the son of Aline Andrews Mattox and the late James Douglas Mattox. After graduating from West Virginia University, Doug began his law enforcement career at the University of Georgia Police Department to later work at the Athens Police Department and Gwinnett County Police Department. Doug retired from law enforcement to continue his career at the Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office. He served in the Army National Guard for 28 years, including two tours in Iraq, and retired as a Major in 2010. He was a member of Temple Baptist Church where he served as a deacon. He loved coaching his two sons’ football and baseball teams as well as being an active Scout Leader. Survivors in addition to his mother and wife, include three children: Brianna Mattox, Trent (Amanda Clements) Mattox, Trevor (Emily Phinney) Mattox and one sister: Donna (Chris) Schuler. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, April 19th, 2022 at 2:00pm at Lord and Stephens West Chapel with Dr. Paul Downey officiating. Interment will follow at Evergreen Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6:00pm until 8:00pm on Monday, April 18th, 2022 at the Lord and Stephens West Chapel.
