Doug Bachtel, distinguished professor emeritus and noted demographer at the University of Georgia, peacefully went to be with the Lord on August 8, 2013, after a 20 year battle with multiple sclerosis. He was met at heaven's gate by our beautiful daughter, April Hali.
During his 33 years with the University, Doug began as an extension rural sociologist, then joined the Housing and Consumer Economics Department in the College of Family and Consumer Sciences. Teaching, editing the Georgia County Guide and journals and going to the office each day was never a job for Doug, for he truly loved his work.
Doug's humor, his ability to transform statistics into a user friendly format and his availability to state agencies, newspapers, researchers, students, co-workers and many friends will be sorely missed.
Although Doug earned both undergrad and graduate degrees from Colorado State, and his doctorate from Ohio State, he was an avid Bulldog fan and considered Georgia his place to be his home.
Doug is survived by his wife of 33 years, Bonnie, and stepson, Travis.
His service will be Saturday, August 17th at 1:00pm at Lord and Stephens Funeral Home on Jimmy Daniel Road in Bogart. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Nuéi's Space located at 396 Oconee Street, Athens, GA 30601 (http://www.nuci.org/help/donate-online/).
