Dorothy “Dot” Hines Barrett, 94, of Athens, died peacefully June 2, 2023.
A native and lifelong resident of Athens, she was a daughter of the late Francis Xavier Hines and Effie Burton Lord.
Dot served as the Chairman of the Clarke County Board of Elections, and Supervisor of Elections and Voter Registration for twenty-five years. She passionately served her community and state long after her retirement.
She was a longtime member of Green Acres Baptist Church.
A gracious hostess, Dot’s home was the Gathering Place, especially on Sundays, where she served lunch for many family members, friends, and strangers alike. She could be found most summer days tending her garden and sharing fresh vegetables with others. Known for her quick wit and infectious laugh, she will be loved and missed by many. Her legacy lives on with 16 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild- truly a testament to a life well lived.
Dot was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. G. Clifton Barrett (2003) and brothers; Pete Hines, Forrest Hines, Bryan Hines, and Jimmy Hines. Survivors include her children, Benny Barrett (Mary Ann) of Athens, Priscilla Barrett Carter (Richard) of Winterville, George Burton Barrett (Joy) of Holly Springs, NC, Maria Woods (Dennis, deceased) of Athens and Bryan Barrett (Michele) of Winterville; sister, Lou Barrett of Gainesville, GA; 16 grandchildren, Candy Alington (Trenton) of Athens, Xav Barrett (Rebecca) of Bogart, Celeste Williams (Taylor) of Atlanta, Christopher Carter (Krystal Ward) of Stone Mountain, Matthew Carter (Lauren) of Athens, Hannah Anderson (Andrew) of Jacksonville, FL, Robyn Williams (Sean) of Spring Hill, TN, Melinda Bunt (Dave) of Holly Springs, NC, Amy Elrod (Josh) of Hull, Charlie Barrett of Fairfield, MT, Samuel Woods, Jacob Woods (Maris), Barrett Woods, Jackson Woods, all of Athens, Caroline Barrett (Will Whitehead) and Whit Barrett of Winterville; 24 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild, and a number of nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends at Lord and Stephens, EAST, Sunday, June 4, 2023 from 6:00 until 8:00 PM.
Funeral Services will be Monday, June 5, 2023 at 11:00 AM at Lord and Stephens, EAST with Rev. Lewis Cooper officiating. Her grandsons will serve as pallbearers. Interment will follow at Evergreen Memorial Park.
