Dorothy (Child) Crane Stofer, 90, went home to be with her Lord on August 24, 2012, with family by her side in Santa Rosa, California. She was born on November 30, 1921 in Shelby, Mississippi to Earl and Mary Child. She graduated from Shelby High School in Shelby, Mississippi and from Bellhaven College in Jackson, Mississippi. She worked for a time as a public school music teacher, and as a church and community choral director in Greenville, Mississippi. She married The Rev. Paul Edgar Crane on June 14, 1951, and had three sons, David, Stephen and Charles. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Paul, her son David, a brother, Stanley Child and his wife, Clara; brothers-in-law, William Rule, William Ross, Thad Amaker, Sr., Roy Coursey , Owen Roberts, and a nephew, Thad Amaker, Jr.
She was remarried to Mr. Jackson "Jack" D. Stofer, Jr. of Mt. Sterling, Kentucky on January 29, 1982. He preceded her in death on July 4, 2005. She was a former member of the First Presbyterian Church of Athens and continued her membership in the Mt. Sterling Presbyterian Church. In Mt. Sterling, she assisted with after school tutoring program and helped to crochet blankets for infants of Montgomery County. Other places of residence include Nitro, West Virginia; Lexington, Kentucky; Knoxville, Tennessee and Winder, Georgia. She was devoted to family, loved music and singing, enjoyed the arts and history, and especially loved her Lord Jesus Christ. She will be greatly missed.
Surviving are her sons; Dr. Stephen M. Crane, wife Maria, their son Benjamin; all of Santa Rosa, California; and the Rev. Charles E. Crane , wife Mary , their daughters Sharon and Hannah; all of Hermitage, Pennsylvania. Also surviving are her sister, Mary Helen Roberts of Jackson, Mississippi; two sisters-in-law, Effie Rule of Cambridge, Maryland, and Katharine (Kitty) Ross, of Athens. Numerous nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews survive as well.
Visitation will be Tuesday, September 18 from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. at Lord and Stephens, EAST. Services will be Wednesday, September 19 at 11:00 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of Athens, Georgia. Interment will follow at the Oconee Hill Cemetery with The Rev. Glenn Doak, Jr., and The Rev. Charles E. Crane officiating.
