Dorothy Ruth Hefling Paul

Dorothy Ruth Hefling Paul, 82, died peacefully November 21, 2013. Dorothy was born in Hutchinson, Kansas. She is preceded in death by her parents, Arthur William Hefling and Dorothy Pennock Hefling and a sister, Barbara Jean Hefling Jones.

Dorothy is survived by her husband, William D. Paul, Jr., and three daughters Sarah Paul (Kennesaw), Susan Paul (Watkinsville), and Dot Paul (Statham) as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins from California, Colorado, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas and Washington.

Dorothy graduated from Kansas State University with a Bachelor of Science in Humanities English. She started her career as a sports writer and photographer in Chanute, Kansas, then worked at the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City in their research and publications division. It was in Kansas City where she met Bill, her husband of 51 years. She retired after many years as an editor at The University of Georgia's Carl Vinson Institute of Government. She was an avid reader and had an inquisitive mind. She was particularly interested in current events, genealogy and whodunit television series. Her genealogical interests led her to become an organizing member of the Apalachee Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was a loyal and supportive wife, mother, and friend who will be missed for her generous spirit, her wise advice, her kind heart and her shrewd editing skills (which we hope are not sorely missed in these paragraphs).

Visitation will be at Lord and Stephens East on Saturday, November 30 from 6:00-8:00 pm. A memorial service will be held at the Cecil B. Day Chapel of the State Botanical Garden of Georgia at 4:00 p.m. Sunday, December 1. Interment will occur at a later date at Coleman Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery in Wadley, Georgia and Valley Township Cemetery, Haven, Kansas.

The family extends deepest gratitude to the staff of Athens Regional Medical Center and Compassionate Care Hospice. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Athens Area Emergency Food Bank, the C.J. (Chief) Medlin Fund for Excellence in Student Publications (Fund #F79365) at Kansas State University, or a charity of your choice.
