"I was born happy," she said. "I intend to live and leave that way."
And she did.
Dorothy Carlisle Montgomery died Friday October 28, 2016. She was 88 years old. She was still happy.
The widow of Professor Marion H. Montgomery, Jr., of Crawford, Athens, and Thomaston Georgia, she was the daughter of the late Dr. B.E. Carlisle and Villa Dean Carlisle of Camilla, Georgia.
The Great Depression and the years of World War II could not over-ride the grand adventures of childhood nor the excitement of attending a brand new WPA consolidated school with real radiators for heat. Even the hook-worm tests were cause for interest... She and her friends played at jungle life by arcing out on rope swings far over the roiling waters of the Flint River. They lined the streets to wave cheerfully at trucks full of German POW's heading out to work in pecan groves. As a little chap, she traveled about the county as her veterinarian father's gate-opener. At a penny per gate, she did not get rich.
There followed two years of college at Randolph Macon College in Virginia and two more at The University of Georgia, where Dot earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Journalism, and met the faculty and students who would be life-long friends.
And then there was Marion. He was the one. Several years after gradation they married; they spent most of the rest of their lives associated with UGA and the world of letters and literature.
Second to no other loyalty was their devoted life in the Church, first at Emmanuel Episcopal Church and later especially at Saint Stephen's Anglican Catholic Church in Athens.
Happily, there's a great gaggle of children, grands, great-grands, and godsons and goddaughters to fill their old pews. Dot is survived by six daughters and one son, and her beloved sister, Deanna Moss, There are twenty-two grands, eight great-grands, and many godchildren. There's Priscilla and Ken Jensen, Lola Dean Montgomery, Marion III and Debbie Montgomery, Heli Montgomery Dunn, Sabine Boes and Lewellyn Montgomery Byrd. They and their children are scattered all over the USA, Australia, Japan, etc. Some will serve at the altar for the burial office. Grandchildren and great-grandchildren include Rebecca Mattson, Col, Quinn, and Lily Maeve McDermott, Joseph Gallerano, Dominic Gallerano, Damian Gallerano, and Amber, Piers Jensen, Berit Jensen, Henning Jensen, Joshua Montgomery and Eileen , Max and Finley, Ezra Montgomery and Sandra Guido, Niab Montgomery ,Mercy Montgomery, Maribel Montgomery-Anderson and Stephen Anderson, Melody Montgomery, Malcolm McFoy Dunn, Thomas Willey, Nelita Rose Willey, Sam Byrd ,Daliz , Leilani and Yosette Byrd Perez, Ben Byrd, Graham Byrd, Nathan Byrd, and Oskar Boes Way.
Conducting the burial service are clergy much loved and appreciated by the family. They have provided mighty support in good times and at times of challenge. They have celebrated with us the greatest and the smallest of joys.
