Dorothy Handley

Dorothy June Brandenburg Handley, age 89, died peacefully at home on Saturday, June 19, 2021, surrounded by the love of Becky, Jim and Jamie.

A native of Athens, Dorothy was the daughter of the late Willian Lynn and Bertha Brandenburg.  She was the wife of the late Norman Handley and was retired from Southern Bell.  She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, siblings William, Margaret, Carolyn and Dorothy Henrietta and her beloved Dachshund, Priscilla.

Dorothy was a lifelong member of First Presbyterian Church of Athens. For many years, she delighted in volunteering at First Presbyterian, as well as Covenant Presbyterian Church. Of the numerous tasks, she especially took great pride in counting collections, serving as a Friday greeter and helping prepare and distribute bulletins.

Dorothy enjoyed spending time with her friends and, since 2002, looked forward to her weekly dinner with Linda Delinski, Kay Ruark, Robin Ansley Malone, Kay Spencer and Sylvia Wilson.

Funeral services will be Friday, June 25, 2021 at 11:00 AM at the chapel of Lord and Stephens Funeral Home, EAST, Athens with Rev. Mark Harper and Dr. Ryan Baer officiating. The family will receive friends with light refreshments beginning at 9:30 AM. Entombment at Evergreen Memorial Park will follow the chapel service.

The family would especially like to thank the following caregivers for their wonderful care and concern for Dorothy. Leisa Neal, Ellen Cook, Cindy Parrish, Rieance Hecktor, Natasha Akingbade, Laura Foskey, Nancy Kittles, Regina Locklin, Francy Coram, Alison Phillips, Veronia Hunter and Nurse Sierra, as well as Dr. Kirk Melville and Dr. Elizabeth Schultz, her longtime physicians who she dearly loved.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Covenant Presbyterian Church.
