Athens, GA - Dorothy Marie (Dot) Floyd Edwards, 87, of Athens, GA, passed away at Presbyterian Village in Austell, GA, on February 7, 2014.
Daughter of D.L. Floyd, Sr. and Naomi Marie Floyd of Athens, Mrs. Edwards was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Emory Hayes Edwards, grandson John David Edwards and her two brothers, D.L. Floyd, Jr. and William Robert Floyd.
Known as "Miss Dot" to the many children she served, Mrs. Edwards held a Master of Education (MEd) in Early Childhood Education as well as a BS in Home Economics from the University of Georgia. Named Gainesville, Georgia's Woman of the Year in 1965 for her work in establishing the Gainesville First Presbyterian Church Kindergarten and for her effort in helping found the Newman School to serve developmentally delayed children in Gainesville, Ga., Mrs. Edwards returned to Athens to serve as the Director of the University of Georgia's State Training Office for Child Development which provided training and technical assistance for Head Start Programs in the State of Georgia. She later enjoyed a second career in real estate in Athens, GA with the firm of Hutchins, Cox & Pierson. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church and numerous professional associations and civic organizations.
Mrs. Edwards is survived by her two children, son David Kenneth Edwards (Rita) and daughter Susan Edwards Stone (Richard), both of Athens, five grandchildren: Ronnie Hayes (Jeri) Edwards, Michael Burt (Lisa) Edwards, Steven Douglas (Crystal) Edwards, Kimberly Hayes (Josh) Stuart, John Richard Stone and nine great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be Friday, February 14 at Lord and Stephens, EAST from 4:00 until 6:00 PM. Graveside services will be Saturday at 2:00 PM at Oconee Hill Cemetery.
