Athens - Dorothy Nelson Dendy, 91, of Athens , GA , passed away on Sunday, July 3, 2011. She was born on March 4, 1920, to J.D. and Tressie Nelson of Clay County, Alabama. Her family moved to Albertville , Alabama , when she was a small child and this place always held a special place in her heart.
Dorothy met Milton Dendy in 1938 and they were married on December 28, 1940. While Milton was stationed overseas during the war, Dorothy worked at the Anniston Ordinance Depot. When he returned from the war, they had three sons as they moved from Alabama to Washington , D.C. , Missouri , Tennessee and Illinois . They arrived in Georgia in 1957 and made their way to Athens in 1959, where they have since remained.
Dorothy held several positions at the University of Georgia , most memorably as secretary to Dan Biggers when he served as Dean of Freshmen Men. In mid-life, she decided on a career change and studied to become a medical records librarian. She excelled in the demanding coursework for which she was certified. She was employed at Athens General Hospital and a private hospital in Rome , Georgia , for a number of years.
Before her illness, Dorothy had been an active member of two senior citizens clubs, the Tuckston handbell choir, and she was a faithful and active member of Oconee Street United Methodist Church . Always encouraging and supportive of her family, she will be forever missed. She is survived by her husband Milton, their sons and wives, Bob and Vickie, John and Sheree, and Ken Dendy; two granddaughters, MaryBeth and Valerie Dendy; and sister, Sarah McCreless of Albertville , Alabama .
She will be buried at New Hope Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery in Boaz , Alabama , on Wednesday, July 6, 2011.
A memorial service will be held in the chapel of Lord & Stephens East on Sunday, July 10, at 2:30P.M. The Rev. Lisa Caine will preside.
